Man-Computer Symbiosis
 

Summary

"Man-computer symbiosis is an expected development in cooperative interaction

between men and electronic computers. It will involve very close

coupling between the human and the electronic members of the partnership.

The main aims are 1) to let computers facilitate formulative thinking

as they now facilitate the solution of formulated problems, and 2) to enable

men and computers to cooperate in making decisions and controlling complex

situations without inflexible dependence on predetermined programs.

In the anticipated symbiotic partnership, men will set the goals, formulate

the hypotheses, determine the criteria, and perform the evaluations. Computing

machines will do the routinizable work that must be done to prepare

the way for insights and decisions in technical and scientific thinking. Preliminary

analyses indicate that the symbiotic partnership will perform intellectual

operations much more effectively than man alone can perform them.

Prerequisites for the achievement of the effective, cooperative association

include developments in computer time sharing, in memory components, in

memory organization, in programming languages, and in input and output

equipment.

1.1 Symbiosis

The fig tree is pollinated only by the insect Blastophaga grossorun. The

larva of the insect lives in the ovary of the fig tree, and there it gets its

food. The tree and the insect are thus heavily interdependent: the tree

cannot reproduce wit bout the insect; the insect cannot eat wit bout the tree;

together, they constitute not only a viable but a productive and thriving

partnership. This cooperative “living together in intimate association, or

even close union, of two dissimilar organisms” is called symbiosis [27].

“Man-computer symbiosis” is a subclass of man-machine systems. There

are many man-machine systems. At present, however, there are no mancomputer

symbioses. The purposes of this paper are to present the concept

and, hopefully, to foster the development of man-computer symbiosis by analyzing

some problems of interaction between men and computing machines,

calling attention to applicable principles of man-machine engineering, and

pointing out a few questions to which research answers are needed. The

hope is that, in not too many years, human brains and computing machines

will be coupled together very tightly, and that the resulting partnership will

think as no human brain has ever thought and process data in a way not

approached by the information-handling machines we know today."

POP: ARTE DE CONSUMO?

"Enquanto toda a arte até à Pop-Arte se funda numa visão do mundo «em profundidade» (alimentando-se da transcendência das coisas), esta pretende tornar-se homogénea da ordem imanente dos signos: homogénea da produção industrial e serial e, consequentemente, do carácter artificial e fabricado de todo o ambiente; homogénea da saturação em extensão e da abstracção culturalizada da nova ordem das coisas.

(...) a Arte Pop significa o fim da perspectiva, o fim da evocação, o fim do testemunho, o fim do gestual criador - o que não é de menor importância - o fim da subversão do mundo e da maldição da arte. Visa não só a imanência do mundo «civilizado», mas a sua integração total no mesmo mundo.

(...) Não admira (que os artistas pop) tenham preferência em pintar as siglas, as marcas e os slogans que veiculam os objectos e que, em última análise, só consigam pintar isso (Robert Indiana). Não é por jogo nem por «realismo»: é reconhecer a evidência da sociedade de consumo, a saber, que a verdade dos objectos e dos produtos é a respectiva marca. Se a «americanidade» consiste nisso, coclui-se que a americanidade constitui a própria lógica da cultura contemporânea e não temos direito de censurar os artistas pop pelo facto de a porem em evidência.

Não podemos igualmente reprovar-lhes o sucesso comercial, que aceitam sem vergonha. Seria pior constituir objecto de maldição, reintegrando-se assim numa função sagrada. É lógico que a arte, que não contradiz o mundo dos objectos, mas explora o respectivo sistema, ingresse também no seu seio. Acaba assim a hipocrisia e o ilogismo radical.

(...) a arte pop é a primeira a explorar a próprio estatuto de arte-objecto «assinado» e «consumido».

(...) Andy warhol afirma «a realidade não precisa de intermédio; importa apenas isolá-la para a tela». Ora aí é que reside verdadeiramente o problema, porque a quotidianidade desta cadeira (ou de determinado «hamburger», guarda-lamas de automóvel ou rosto de «pin-up») consiste no precisamente no respectivo contexto e, de modo sigular, no contexto serial de todas as cadeiras semelhantes ou levemente dissemelhantes, etc. A quotidianidade é a diferença na repetição. Ao isolar a cadeira na tela roubo-lhe a quotidianidade e retiro também á tela todo o carácter de objecto quotidiano. Semelhante impasse é muito conhecido: nem a arte pode dissolver-se no quotidiano (tela=cadeira), nem consegue captar o quotidiano como tal (cadeira isolada na tela=cadeira real). A imanência e a transcendência são igualmente impossíveis - dois aspectos do mesmo sonho. Numa palavra: não existe essência do quotidiano e do banal e, por consequência, não há arte do quotidano.

(...) No entanto, não temos o direito de acusar Warhol e outros artistas pop de má fé: a sua exigência lógica choca com o estatuto sociológico e cultural da arte, contra a qual nada podem. A sua ideologia traduz esta impotência. Quanto mais pretendem dessacralizar a sua prática, mais os sacraliza a sociedade. Obtém-se assim o resultado de que a sua tentativa - por mais radical que seja - de secularização da arte, nos temas e no processo, desemboca numa exaltação e numa evidência nunca vista do sagrado na arte. Os artistas pop esquecem simplesmente que, a fim de um quadro deixar de ser super signo sagrado (objecto único, rubrica, objecto de comércio nobre e mágico), não basta o conteúdo ou as intenções do autor: as estruturas de produção da cultura é que são decisivas. Em última análise, só a racionalização do mercado da pintura, como de qualquer outro produto industrial, é que conseguiria dessacralizá-la e inserir o quadro entre os objectos quotidianos (em tal acepção, a verdade da arte pop seria o salariado e o painel de afixação, e não o contrato e a galeria de pintura)."
